Many women do not know where to turn to restore breast symmetry after surgery. Second to Nature offers discreet solutions for women facing this difficulty - whether they have had a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or reconstructive surgery.
Second to Nature Mastectomy Boutique is a fully accredited facility, with 3 Certified Mastectomy Fitters on staff to help you find the perfect solution for your needs.
If you are preparing for any type of breast surgery, the first step is to stop by for a pre-surgical consult. This visit only takes 25-30 minutes, and does not require an appointment.
At your pre-surgical consultation, we will fit you for a post-surgical camisole. This is a specially designed undergarment that you can take to the hospital with you and wear immediately after and in the first few weeks following surgery. Soft and comfortable, the camisole is desinged to slip on easily and hold a weightless cotton puff to restore shape until you are ready to be fitted with a prosthesis. Removable pouches hold your drainage tubes comfortably and securely in place. If you are having breast conserving surgery and do not want a post-surgical camisole, we can fit you with a leisure bra that will be more comfortable than a traditional bra during the healing process.
We will also start your paperwork and check your insurance benefits. Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance companies cover the cost of your post-surgical camisole(s), as well as your other post-surgical garments.
If you are undergoing a mastectomy of one or both breasts, and are not planning on having reconstructive surgery, you can be fitted with post-mastectomy bras and breast prostheses once your surgical site has completely healed - usually about 6 weeks after surgery. You should make an appointment with one of our Certified Mastectomy Fitters. Your fitting will take about 1- 1 1/2 hours.
Your fitting will begin with selecting the right bra. A properly fitted mastectomy bra will hold your prosthesis and support your natural breast.
The most popular prostheses are made of silicone - which most accurately duplicates the feel and movement of the natural breast. Available in a range of sizes, shapes, densities and colors, your fitter will guide you in choosing the right prosthesis.
Other protheses are available for use in addition to your silicone prosthesis - including lightweight leisure forms and breathable beaded froms for end of day use.
If you enjoy swimming, traveling to the beach, cruises, or water aerobics, you will want a post-surgical swimsuit and swim form - designed to be used in chlorinated or salt water.
Another great option available is the Radiant Impressions Custom Breast Prosthesis. This is a one-of-a-kind breast form hand-made from a cast of your upper body. The back of the prosthesis is contoured to your chest wall for a perfect fit, and the front of your form is a mirror image to your remaining breast. You can be fitted with a Radiant Impression one year after your surgery.
More women today are opting for breast-conserving surgeries than ever before. Breast unevenness can still be an issue. If this is the case for you, schedule a fitting with a Certified Mastectomy Fitter. Allow about 1-1 1/2 hours for your fitting.
Second to Nature offers a great selection of partial prostheses and shells to restore balance between the breasts. While you can wear many of these partial prostheses in a traditional bra, we recommend being professionally fit with a post-mastectomy bra - for the most comfort, support and naturalness.
Radiant Impressions Custom Breast Prostheses also offer partial prostheses and nipples - custom made from a cast of your upper body for a completely natural look and feel. We can create a custom prosthesis for you one year after your surgery.
Following Reconstructive Surgery
Many women are surprised to discover that unevenness is still a problem after reconstruction. The reality for many is that often there is a difference in size and shape of the reconstructed breast and the natural breast. Also, differences can manifest themselves after the surgery - as weight is gained or lost, or changes that come with age affect the natural breast but not the reconstructed breast.
Federal Law requires insurance companies to cover breast prostheses for cancer patients regardless of whether you opt for mastectomy, lumpectomy or reconstructive surgery. Medicare, N.C. Medicaid and all major insurance companies will cover the cost of at least one silicone prosthesis - and most will cover non-silicone prostheses and post-mastectomy bras. We are participating providers with most insurance carriers, which means we take care of all the paperwork - and you pay little or nothing up-front - only the applicable deductibles and co-pays.
Most insurance companies will pay for new products periodically - to replace worn products or if a new size is needed due to weight change or additional surgery, etc.
